John había decidido escribir una canción autobiográfica hacía casi un año. Comenzó como un poema largo,
en el que relataba un viaje en autobús desde Menlove Avenue, donde vivía,
hasta el centro de Liverpool. Lugares tales como Penny Lane o Strawberry Field eran mencionados.
Sin embargo, esta letra no le convenció del todo, a John, que le pareció aburrida.
Escribe la letra que hoy conocemos, sobre lugares que recordaba, mencionando viejos amigos,
en especial a Stuart Sutcliffe, ya fallecido. Por eso es que aclara que algunos están muertos y otros vivos.
Aunque John recordaba que Paul había escrito la parte central de la canción, según Paul,
escribió la melodía completa basándose en la letra de John. John recuerda a
In My Life como su primer gran trabajo. Esta letra se encuentra en una de las paredes
